FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Buy

Are your tortoises captive-bred?

Yes. Our tortoises are responsibly captive-bred with attention to their health, development, and proper care from an early age.

Are tortoises good pets for beginners?

Yes. Many tortoise species can be excellent pets for beginners when their housing, temperature, lighting, humidity, and dietary needs are properly understood.

What should I know before getting a tortoise?

Tortoises are long-term companions that require consistent care. Before bringing one home, you should be prepared to provide appropriate housing, heating, UVB lighting, a suitable diet, fresh water, and access to a qualified reptile veterinarian when needed.

What species do you offer?

Available species can vary. Each tortoise listing identifies the species and provides relevant information to help you understand its needs before purchasing.

How old are your tortoises?

Age varies by individual tortoise. Available age or hatchling information is provided with the listing whenever applicable.

Can I choose a specific tortoise?

Selection depends on current availability. If you’re looking for a particular species, size, or individual, contact us before ordering.

Tortoise Care

What does a tortoise eat?

Diet depends on the species. Many commonly kept tortoises require a high-fiber diet consisting primarily of appropriate grasses, weeds, leafy plants, and other suitable foods.

Does my tortoise need UVB lighting?

For most commonly kept species, yes. Proper UVB exposure supports normal calcium metabolism and healthy shell and bone development.

What temperature does a tortoise need?

Temperature requirements vary by species. A proper enclosure should provide suitable warm and cooler areas so your tortoise can regulate its body temperature.

Does my tortoise need a heat lamp?

Many indoor setups require a heat source and basking area. The appropriate equipment and temperatures depend on the species.

How much space does a tortoise need?

Tortoises need enough room to walk, explore, exercise, eat, and move between different temperature zones. Their enclosure should also account for their eventual adult size.

Does my tortoise need a water dish?

Yes. Fresh, clean water should generally be provided in a shallow dish that your tortoise can safely access.

Can tortoises live together?

Some can, but cohabitation isn’t automatically recommended. Species, sex, size, temperament, and available space all need to be considered. Individual housing is often the simpler option.

Can I keep my tortoise indoors?

Yes. Indoor enclosures can work very well when they provide the appropriate space, lighting, heating, humidity, substrate, and other environmental requirements.

Can my tortoise live outdoors?

Some species can thrive in properly designed outdoor enclosures when climate and conditions are suitable. Outdoor housing must provide security, shelter, shade, appropriate temperatures, and protection from predators.

How do I know if my tortoise is healthy?

A healthy tortoise is generally alert, responsive, and active during its normal activity periods. Changes in appetite, activity, breathing, eyes, shell condition, or appearance should be discussed with a qualified reptile veterinarian.

How long do tortoises live?

Many tortoises can live for several decades with proper care. Lifespan varies considerably by species.

We use careful packaging and shipping practices designed to keep your tortoise secure and comfortable during transit.

Proper preparation and suitable shipping conditions are important. We take care with packaging and shipping arrangements to minimize unnecessary stress during transit.

When will my tortoise be shipped?

Should I take my new tortoise to a veterinarian?

A new tortoise can benefit from an examination by a veterinarian experienced with reptiles, particularly for new keepers or whenever you notice something unusual.

What should I have ready before my tortoise arrives?

Have the enclosure completely prepared before arrival, including appropriate substrate, heating, UVB lighting, temperature monitoring, food, water, shelter, and other species-specific supplies.

What if I've never owned a tortoise before?

That’s okay. Many experienced keepers started as beginners. Research your species, prepare the enclosure ahead of time, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
